The Monongahela, Allegheny and Ohio Rivers have defined life in the Pittsburgh area for centuries. In the era of modern commerce, 23 locks and dams (17 now run by the Port of Pittsburgh) were built on the three rivers to control flooding and to provide consistently navigable transportation routes for local and regional industries.
